Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-1st District, is the only member of Maine’s congressional delegation who has not spoken out publicly against the president’s immigration actions, which have emboldened hatred and violence against immigrants and religious, racial and ethnic minorities.

Poliquin’s family were immigrants to this country — as we all were at some point in this nation’s history — and the Catholic religion of Franco Americans was once treated with the same fear and discrimination now being directed at the religion of our Muslim American neighbors.

I urge Poliquin to speak out loud and clear against intolerance and bigotry, for if he does not, he is complicit with those who undermine American values of equality before law and religious tolerance. So far, he has been silent. For the good of our nation, let us hope that he has the courage to show moral leadership at a time when it is sorely needed.
