Passers-by helped rescue a Belfast woman whose car slid off a slippery road Tuesday and landed upside down in the Little River in Belfast.

Sunday Bucklin, 56, escaped with only a few scratches, police said. Belfast police Sgt. John Gibbs said a good Samaritan, Edgar Sullivan, used a rock to break out a side window of the 2002 Buick Century. Two other people also helped Bucklin get out of the car, Gibbs said.

Bucklin was driving on Route 52 when her car went off the road shortly before 9 a.m. due to slippery conditions. The car traveled along a field, struck a rock, went airborne and clipped a cherry tree, which caused the car to flip and end up in the river, Gibbs said.

The car broke through the ice in about 1½ feet of water near the Dog Island Bridge. Gibbs said Bucklin, who was wearing a seat belt, was lucky that the car landed in shallow water.

After Bucklin was helped from the vehicle she was brought to Gibbs’ cruiser to get warm. She was then checked by a Belfast ambulance crew, which drove her home.
