Recently I watched a documentary on the career of Adolf Hitler. It scared me. There seem to be a parallel to his rise happening currently in our own society with President Donald Trump’s using of the phrase “enemy of the American people” to describe the news media.
“Enemy of the people” was used by the Nazis to define groups that were opposed to their totalitarian regime. Goebbels, writing in 1941, said, “Each Jew is a sworn enemy of the German people.”
Our democracy depends on various institutions to mediate differences and provide checks and balances. Let us be careful of these attacks on our institutions, for we could end up with an authoritarian government.
