We have been on Medicare for 15 years and are concerned with the plans of Republican legislators in Congress to implement a voucher system that would essentially privatize this excellent program. (It would mean that we would get a subsidy and have to buy private insurance but woe to us if the subsidy wasn’t enough to cover our health care … a very scary scenario.)
Not only does Medicare work smoothly and efficiently at a very reasonable cost to administer, but it also gives us such important benefits. For example, when my husband had a cancer diagnosis, it paid not only for a second specialist’s opinion but also permitted a second look at his biopsy results at Johns Hopkins. This permitted us to carefully examine our options and decide on the best treatments.
We don’t want block grants. We don’t want vouchers. We don’t want Medicare privatized. We hope our Congress will not destroy this vital program.
