The body of a man missing since Feb. 3 was discovered by a hiker Friday morning in woods in Newfield, according to Maine State Police.
A hiker came upon the body of John Scabia Jr., 34, in the woods off Spring Road just after 8 a.m. Friday. That was 1 to 1½ miles from where he had last been seen, walking in the woods behind his home on Stone Road in Newfield. State police said the body was identified as Scabia’s.
Scabia was an experienced outdoorsman but had never disappeared for that length of time, said York County Sheriff William King after Scabia was first reported missing. A ground search of the area and the deployment of a drone equipped with thermal imaging did not turn up information on his whereabouts.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Scabia’s cause of death.
