Voters in Belgrade have a great opportunity awaiting them when they go to the polls on Friday, March 17. They can choose to vote yes to accept a gift to their town that will have a lasting impact on the safety and appearance of their downtown village for years to come. And that opportunity is being given to them at no cost to taxpayers.

Sidewalks and pedestrian lighting to make the downtown village safer and more pedestrian-friendly will be installed in conjunction with the state reconstruction of Route 27 in 2018. The $495,873 to pay for these enhancements has already been raised by the Friends of Belgrade Lakes Village, a 501(c)(3) organization.

This nonprofit group, which is the outgrowth of the town’s Streetscape Committee, has been working to raise funds to pay for the sidewalk and streetlight enhancements. Donations to the Friends of Belgrade Lakes Village have come from individuals, businesses and foundations.

The next step is for voters to support their town and these community-based efforts by voting yes to accept the funds.

Article 11 asks voters if they will accept these funds. March 17 is the time for Belgrade voters to answer that question with a yes vote.
