Gorham police said a skateboarder from South Portland was hospitalized late Tuesday evening with serious injuries after he was hit by a car on New Portland Road.
Sgt. Ted Hatch identified the skateboarder in a press release as Tyler Cartwright, 24. A car driven by Ramon Saravia, 77, of East Waterboro hit Cartwright around 9 p.m. in the vicinity of 267 New Portland Road.
Cartwright was taken to Maine Medical Center with what Hatch described as “serious injuries.” The preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors, but Hatch said it appears that Cartwright was riding his board in the middle of Saravia’s travel lane.
The crash remains under investigation.
New Portland Road between Libby Avenue and Bartlett Road was closed to traffic for about 90 minutes because of the accident. The road reopened at 10:30 p.m.
