CLINTON — A fire that destroyed a trailer full of hay Sunday is still under investigation, according to the Maine Forest Service.

The fire occurred at the farm owned by Merton Richards on Gogan Road on the Clinton-Benton town line shortly after 2 p.m. About 12 firefighters from Fairfield and Clinton responded. Since Fairfield services Benton for fires, Fairfield was called in.

Farmers were baling hay when they noticed the fire. The trailer, which is about 10 feet tall, was full of hay at the time. The fire went up quickly, and about 4,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish it. The fire was knocked down fairly quickly.

There were no injuries, and the damage was limited to the hay and trailer.
