The Kennebec Valley Garden Club recently awarded two local students scholarships.

Raquel Gibbs plans to start her junior year at Husson University in the fall and has been selected to receive $1,000 from the Kennebec Valley Garden Club, Barrows Scholarship. Gibbs plans to study biology and environmental science.

She is especially interested in sustainability and is active on the university’s Sustainability Committee. One of the projects is to restore a significant vernal pool on campus. Other interests include the use of plants in medicine and working with youth teaching respect for the environment.

Kevin Frankhauser also plans to start his junior year in the fall at the University of Maine in Orono to study forestry. He was selected to receive $1,000 from the Kennebec Valley Garden Club, Barrows Scholarship.

Frankhauser has worked to receive his Red Card allowing him to assist in fighting forest fires as well as doing a internship with the Maine Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation. During the time he spent with the foundation, he learned silviculture, focusing on planting, inoculating, collecting data and identifying diseased trees. This summer he will intern with a land management company taking tree measurements and observing harvests.
