THE FORKS — A New Hampshire man was charged with driving drunk after crashing into a utility pole on U.S. Route 201 early Monday morning, according to authorities.

Jay Borden, 25, of Keene, New Hampshire, was driving alone in a 2009 tan Subaru Forester north around 4 a.m. when he crashed into a ditch, Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said.

Deputy Isaac Wacome investigated the crash and found that Borden had also struck a utility pole, breaking it.

Borden was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a Class D misdemeanor. Lancaster said Borden’s blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

He was taken to the Somerset County Jail, where he later posted bail. He is expected in court on Sept. 9.

A tractor-trailer for the Quebec-based Raymond Tardiff Company had hit the wires that fell in the roadway after the pole was broken, Lancaster said, separating the lines from an unoccupied camp.

Borden’s Subaru was totaled and towed, but he was not injured in the crash. The tractor-trailer sustained some damage to its windshield.

The Forks Fire Department assisted at the scene.
