JAY — A Livermore Falls man was arrested early Wednesday morning after starting a fire in the garage of the home where his mother lives.

Devin Penney, 21, was arrested after he started a fire in the garage at 229 Intervale Road in Jay. According to Sgt. Ken Grimes of the state fire marshal’s office, the garage was below the living area of the home. The man’s mother, Sabrina Penney, and three children were home at the time of the fire, which was called in to Jay police and fire department at approximately 12:30 a.m. Grimes described the fire as small, consisting of cloth and paper products ignited by “an open flame device.”

Grimes said there was no indication that an accelerant was used to start the fire. At this point, a motive is not being released.

Penney was charged with one count of class A arson and was taken to the Franklin County jail, where he is being held without bail. A mugshot was not available Wednesday afternoon.

Grimes said Penney was an occasional resident of the home, but also has a residence in Livermore Falls.

“There was minor fire damage, some smoke damage, and the residence was ventilated by the fire department and the occupants were able to go back in,” Grimes said.
