Thousands of school children across Maine returned to classes today, heralding the end of summer for teachers and students.

Many students were happy to return to the classroom, giving the thumbs-up, hugging friends, and smiling as they filed into Waterville and Augusta schools.

Lily Brown, a kindergartner at George Mitchell School in Waterville, flashed a big smile as she headed inside.

“I like school,” she said.

Here are some of the scenes captured at Lincoln Elementary School in Augusta and Albert Hall School and George Mitchell School in Waterville.
