Two people from Chelsea, one critically injured, were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center on Friday after a crash reported shortly after 5:40 p.m. on Eastern Avenue in Chelsea.

Maine State Police Trooper Erin James said a minivan driven by Jacob Curtis, 26, was turning left out of the driveway of Bell’s Liquidation at 1196 Eastern Ave., when it was struck by a westbound SUV driven by Jennifer Morrow, 34, of Whitefield.

James said Morrow couldn’t see clearly because of the glare of the setting sun.

Both Curtis and his mother, Wanda Curtis, 63, who was a passenger, were taken to MaineGeneral, where a hospital spokeswoman said Jacob Curtis was in critical condition and Wanda Curtis was in good condition.

James said Morrow was not injured.

Emergency personnel were at the crash scene for about an hour. During that time, one lane was closed temporarily.

James said the vehicles were deemed total losses, and no charges are expected.

Augusta Fire and Rescue, Gardiner Ambulance, and the Chelsea and Togus fire departments went to the scene.
