One person was killed Saturday afternoon following a head-on motor vehicle crash in Fairfield involving a tractor trailer and a passenger car, police said.

The accident was reported around 2:15 p.m. on Route 139, also known as Norridgewock Road, in the area of Davis Road, Fairfield Police Chief Tom Gould said by phone.

“It appears at this time that the passenger vehicle, for some reason, we don’t know why yet, crossed the center line and struck the tractor trailer,” Gould said passing on information from Fairfield police Capt. Paul St. Amand who was at the scene. “There is a single fatality — the operator of the vehicle.”

Gould said the man’s name and any information about what type of vehicle he was driving, how old he is or where he is from, will not be released until family members are notified of his death.

The weather at the time of the accident was clear and sunny. The road was dry and the temperature was about 50 degrees.

Oakland police were called to assist and Maine State Police commercial vehicle units were dispatched to reconstruct the accident because it involved a tractor trailer.

St. Amand said later by phone that the state Department of Environmental Protection has been called because of a fuel leak from the tractor trailer.
