In reference to the article “DA, Sheriff discuss special programs,” by Jason Pafundi on Oct. 26, I would say that educating the public about the veterans court program is a clear example of “putting the cart before the horse.”
The defense attorneys provided by the court should know about the program. The staff at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility should have basic knowledge about the program and/or know how to refer a veteran to the proper resources.
There are many veterans who would benefit from veterans court, yet they are not helped at all — the program has become a political football.
