BALTIMORE — The University of Maine opened a 21-point lead through three quarters and went on to a 64-50 victory against Maryland-Baltimore County in an America East women’s basketball game Wednesday.

Blanca Millan led the Black Bears (9-7, 2-1) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Julie Brosseau added 18 points and four assists, connecting on two 3-pointers for Maine, which led 53-32 heading to the fourth.

Lucrezia Costa scored 12 points for UMBC (1-5, 0-3).

SOUTHERN MAINE 54, RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 40: Emily Nicholson and Kristen Curley each scored 12 points as the Huskies (6-8, 3-1 Little East) handled the Anchormen (7-6, 2-2) at Gorham.

Kimberly Howrigan added 11 points and Chantel Eells finished with 10 for the Huskies, who trailed 17-10 after the first quarter, then held RIC to single digits in the final three quarters. Nicholson put the Huskies ahead for good, 28-25, on a 3-pointer with 6:49 left in the third.

USM, which was called for three fouls, all non-shooting, for the game, took advantage of several extended scoreless stretches by RIC, including the first 4:22 of the third quarter. RIC had 15 points in the second half.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 60, UM-MACHIAS 33: Amanda Brett had 14 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks to lead the Seawolves (11-5, 7-2 Yankee Small College) past the the Clippers (5-10, 3-5) at South Portland.

Jordan Farquharson had 16 points and nine rebounds for SMCC.

PURDUE 47, (21) RUTGERS 33: Ae’Rianna Harris scored 13 points and Purdue (11-7, 2-2 Big Ten) held Rutgers (16-3, 4-1) to 10 points in the first half at West Lafayette, Indiana.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

MARYLAND-BALTIMORE COUNTY 72, MAINE 67: Jairus Lyles had 16 points and seven rebounds for UMBC (11-7, 2-1 America East), which beat Maine (4-14, 1-2) at Bangor.

Lyles scored to give UMBC its biggest lead, 41-30, with 18:26 to play. Maine used a 15-3 run to take a 45-44 lead with 13:57 left.

The Retrievers fell behind by six before recovering for a 59-57 lead with 5:51 remaining.

Aaron Calixte scored 24 points to lead the Black Bears.

COLBY 87, PINE MANOR 79: Sam Jefferson scored 18 of his 27 points in the first half as the Mules (8-5) opened with a 21-9 run en route to a 48-33 halftime lead against the Gators at Newton, Massachusetts.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 104, UM-MACHIAS 70: Ryan Cloutier had 18 first-half points as the Seawolves (10-7, 6-3 Yankee Small College) took a 52-38 lead and beat the Clippers (6-11, 5-3) at South Portland.

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 67, SOUTHERN MAINE 51: The Anchormen (3-10, 1-3 Little East) took control in the first 12 minutes of the second half, using a 30-12 run to open a 21-point lead against the Huskies (1-13, 0-4) at Gorham.

(1) VILLANOVA 89, (10) XAVIER 65: Phil Booth hit five 3-pointers and scored 21 points, and Jalen Brunson had 17 points to lead Villanova (15-1, 3-1 Big East) over Xavier (15-3, 3-2) at Philadelphia.

(4) MICHIGAN STATE 76, RUTGERS 72: Miles Bridges ended his scoreless start with 7:43 left in regulation and finished with just 11 points to barely help Michigan State (16-2, 4-1 Big Ten) bounce back from a loss with an overtime victory against Rutgers (11-7, 1-4) at East Lansing, Michigan.

(7) DUKE 87, PITTSBURGH 52: Marvin Bagley III scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and visiting Duke (14-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast) had little trouble rolling to a victory over Pittsburgh (8-9, 0-4).
