SKOWHEGAN — Police arrested a Waterville man after he allegedly stole $7,000 worth of jewelry from a local business.

Michael Fortin, 27, was arrested after police obtained a search warrant and searched his apartment on High Street in Waterville. Fortin was suspected of stealing jewelry and other assorted items from Hilltop Antiques on Water Street. Det. Sgt. Don Avery, who was the lead investigator on the case, was able to identify Fortin after interviewing witnesses at Hilltop Antiques and other businesses in the area.

During the search of Fortin’s apartment, police found a number of pieces of jewelry stolen from Hilltop Antiques. Fortin told Avery he stole the jewelry because he wanted to find a new apartment. Fortin was arrested on a probation hold and is currently at the Somerset County Jail without bail until he appears in court.
