SKOWHEGAN — A Canaan man, who police say was on probation and allegedly “guzzling” a can of beer in a parked truck while a police officer was talking to other people from the truck, was arrested Sunday for probation violations.
Skowhegan Police Chief David Bucknam on Monday said Officer CJ Viera was flagged down outside the Skowhegan Police Department by someone who said he had seen a man staggering across the Skowhegan Plaza on Island Avenue and get into a black pickup truck.
Viera drove to the parking lot and saw a black Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck in the parking lot with three men inside, Bucknam said. The officer approached the men and “detected the odor of intoxicants on all three subjects,” the chief said.
“One passenger, identified as 27-year-old Isaiah Campbell of Canaan, was observed ‘guzzling’ a Bud Light in the truck while Officer Viera was speaking with one of the occupants outside the vehicle,” according to Bucknam.
Viera conducted a check on Campbell and found him to be subject to three sets of bail conditions, specifying that he not use or possess drugs or alcohol as a condition of release on previous charges.
Bucknam said Campbell “became combative” when Viera spoke with him and was subsequently arrested and charged with violating conditions of release.
“The vehicle was towed due to the occupants having consumed alcohol,” Bucknam said. “They called for a ride from a friend.”
Campbell was taken into custody and remains at the Somerset County Jail in East Madison pending a hearing in court on Wednesday.
