A Gray man was being held Monday night on $15,000 cash bail at the Cumberland County Jail after he allegedly robbed a Westbrook sandwich shop at knifepoint Saturday night.

Westbrook police Capt. Sean Lally said in a statement Monday that Charles M. Small, 50, also known as Kelly Small, entered the Subway restaurant at 390 Bridgton Road (Route 302) around 6:47 p.m. Saturday, brandished a knife, and demanded money from employees. Small ran from the store with the stolen cash, police said.

A short time later, Westbrook police were notified about a man acting suspiciously in the area near 745 Bridgton Road.

“Once there, they detained Charles M. Small,” Lally said. “Officers developed probable cause to arrest Small for the Subway robbery.”

Small appeared in court Monday after being charged with robbery, a Class A felony.
