A 20-year-old Detroit man who already was wanted by police in connection with a domestic violence incident in January in Madison was arrested this week after he allegedly threw a cinder block through the windshield of his mother’s car and assaulted his teenage brother.

Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said William Smith was out on bail conditions when the sheriff’s office received a report of a domestic disturbance early Tuesday afternoon at 119 Dogtown Road in Detroit.

Deputy Wilfred Dodge responded and found that an argument had taken place, Lancaster said.

When the mother said she was calling 911, Smith allegedly went outside, picked up a cinder block, tossed it through the windshield of her 1997 Toyota Corolla and fled the scene.

Smith was free on bail conditions from an earlier disorderly conduct charge from September 2017 and was wanted in connection with a domestic violence incident that occurred Jan. 11 in Madison.

While the deputy was looking for Smith, he allegedly returned to the home, where another argument ensued. Smith allegedly assaulted his 17-year-old brother and again fled into the woods.

Dodge called for the department’s tracking dog. Pittsfield police also went to the scene to provide assistance. Smith finally came out of the woods and surrendered to a Pittsfield police officer.

Smith was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault, criminal mischief and violating conditions of release, all misdemeanors. He was taken to the Somerset County Jail and is being held without bail, the sheriff said.

Smith is scheduled to appear March 14 in Somerset County Unified Court. He also faces numerous charges in connection with the Jan. 11 incident, according to Lancaster.
