AUGUSTA — Cony High School hosts the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference wrestling championships Saturday, when wrestlers from 18 schools will vie for individual honors. Team champions in both Class A and B will also be named.

Skowhegan, Nokomis and Oxford Hills look to be the favorites to contend for team titles, based on seedings, Cony coach Shawn Totman said. The Rams should also be in the hunt.

“I see it as a very tight race,” Totman said. “It may be the team whose kids out-perform their seeds that comes out on top. I think if my kids do that, Cony could also be in the mix for the team title.”

Skowhegan has four No. 1 seeds in Jake Craig (106), Richard Oberg (120), Samson Sirois (138) and Jon Bell (170). Nokomis has only one top seed, James Boyd (220), but has six wrestlers seeded fourth or better.

Other contenders include:

106: Skowhegan freshman Craig carries a 27-0 record into the tournament. Nokomis’ Calvin Peck is the third seed.

113: Cony’s Noah Dumas, the top seed, is undefeated, at 17-0. Nokomis’ Caleb Carrell is the third seed and Mt Blue’s Jagger Bullen is fourth.

120: Skowhegan’s Oberg is the top seed, with Nokomis’ Joshua Brown is No. 2. Both are undefeated and are also returning KVAC champions from last year.

126: MCI’s ZyAnthony Moss holds a 16-0 record in the weight class and is the top seed. Erskine’s Michael Sprague, at No. 2, is 11-1, with the loss coming to Moss by a 3-2 decision.
