unclaimed property
Every year the Maine State Treasurer’s Office reports out the totals for the Unclaimed Property Program, and each year there are millions of dollars worth of unclaimed property that belongs to Maine residents. The unclaimed property could be a balance from an old account, stock holdings that were left to you in a will, or some other asset that was unable to be returned to its rightful owner.
These assets are held free of charge by the treasurer’s office, and you can search for your name, family or business at www.maineunclaimedproperty.gov/. If you find property to claim and need help going through the steps, the treasurer’s office is available to walk you through it, and you can contact them at 624-7470.
But please have caution regarding scams. You can claim your property free of charge. There are some businesses that cater to matching folks with their missing property and charge a small fee, but these people are legitimate and will have legal contracts for you to fill out first. If you receive a phone call, email or letter in the mail asking you to pay a fee up front or to share your personal information in order to find out more information, these are scammers looking to take advantage of you.
If you think you are the target of a scam, you can report this to the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-800-436-2131 or email [email protected]
