MONMOUTH — The 9th annual Jack Traps Youth Ice Fishing Derby will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Cochnewagon Pond. Registration is now open and free for children 12 and younger.

The derby is designed as an introduction to ice fishing and is not a competition. There will be no fish weigh-in. Every child who participates will receive an ice fishing prize and free bait. Free food and drinks will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment. However, if any child does not have equipment available to them, there will be equipment at the derby for them to use.

There also will be volunteers on hand to help drill holes and teach children how to fish, if needed. Some participants will be drawn at random to win prizes, including, but not limited to, an ice auger, Jack Traps ice fishing traps, pack baskets, lifetime fishing licenses and more.

Space is limited, so participants should register before Feb. 19. Registration forms are available at jacktraps.com or at the Jack Traps retail store, 151 Ridge Road in Monmouth. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and arrive dressed in warm clothing including winter boots, hats and mittens. Upon arrival, participating children must check-in at the registration tent on the lake to be eligible for prizes. The random drawings for prizes will begin at 11 a.m. Participants must be present to win.

There sponsors include Bangor Savings Bank, Cobbossee Bait, Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, Monmouth Federal Credit Union, Lewiston/Auburn Tent & Awning, Monmouth Fish & Game, C. Caprara Food Service Equipment, L.L. Bean, Emery’s Meats & Produce, Red Roof Grocery, VPI, Inc. and more.
