The Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal sports departments have earned national honors in the 2017 Associated Press Sports Editors contest for papers.

The Morning Sentinel placed in the Top 7 for its daily sports section among newspapers with circulation under 15,000.

Drew Bonifant, a sports reporter based at the Kennebec Journal, placed in the Top 10 for columns nationwide

Furthermore, the papers’ combined website — www.centralmaine.com/sports — earned honorable mention honors (Top 20) among newspapers with circulation under 30,000. The website award factors in content, appearance and navigability.

Other daily newspapers in the Top 7 include: Burlington (Iowa) The Hawkeye, Charlottesville Daily Progress, Hattiesburg American, Missoulian, Murfreesboro Daily News Journal, and Wyoming Tribune Eagle.
