BURLINGTON, Vt. – Organizers for a pro-gun rally in Burlington, Vermont, say participants are welcome to bear arms, as long as the weapons are handled responsibly.

The Burlington Free Press reports the Saturday rally and march are to protest a recently passed gun control bill that is expected to be signed soon. Pro Rights 2A march organizer Christopher Covey says he’s told participants to “do what you’re comfortable with.”

The new law would raise the legal age for gun purchases and extend mandatory background checks to private gun sales, among other changes.

Covey, who says he’ll carry a .45-caliber pistol on his hip for the rally, says he doesn’t want any displays of aggression at the event.

South Burlington Police Chief Trevor Whipple says no special police presence is planned for the event.
