AUGUSTA — The Maine Senate has approved Gov. Paul LePage’s nomination of a veteran Maine State Housing Authority official to take over the top spot at the agency.
Dan Brennan had served since 2016 as senior director of programs for the authority, an independent state agency also known as MaineHousing that serves more than 90,000 people in the state annually. Brennan will take over as MaineHousing director from John Gallagher, who retired in January.
“I’m humbled to receive this opportunity to lead MaineHousing as our agency continues to implement solid research-based and cost-effective strategies to fulfill our mission,” Brennan, who lives in Winslow, said in a statement after his Senate confirmation vote Thursday.
Established by the Legislature in 1969, MaineHousing is charged with overseeing a wide variety of financial and housing services in the state. Those services include: offering fixed-rate mortgages to low- and moderate-income families, running the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, assisting developers of affordable housing and assisting homeowners with energy-saving weatherization or heating system replacement programs.
LePage nominated Brennan for the position after his initial choice, Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner George Gervais, failed to win approval from the Maine Senate.
“After more than 25 years of service with the agency, Dan has a strong understanding of MaineHousing’s programs,” LePage said when nominating Brennan for the job. “He will ensure that the agency follows its strategic plan to serve people in need in the most effective manner.”
