Sea Dogs fall to Ponies, drop to 0-2 on season

Tomas Nido lined a bases-clearing double in a four-run fifth inning Saturday as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies rallied past the visiting Portland Sea Dogs, 5-3.

The Sea Dogs (0-2) opened the scoring with a Josh Tobias homer in the second, but the Rumble Ponies (2-0) answered in the bottom of the inning with Jhoan Urena’s run-scoring single.

Portland regained the lead in the third when Esteban Quiroz homered to right. Tobias also hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

TENNIS

DAVIS CUP: Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison put the United States in the semifinals for the first time since 2012 by beating Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen of Belgium 5-7, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3), 6-4 at Nashville, Tennessee, to finish a sweep.

The U.S. will play Croatia or Kazakhstan in the semifinals Sept. 14-16.

VOLVO CAR OPEN: The semifinals were postponed because of rain at Chaleston, South Carolina. The schedule Sunday calls for Madison Keys to play Kiki Bertens, followed by the end of the Julia Goerges-Anastasija Sevastova match, stopped at 4-4 in the first set. After a doubles final, the semifinal winners will meet.

BASKETBALL

COLLEGE: Gary Trent Jr. said he’s leaving Duke after one year for the NBA draft.

Trent became the third member of the Blue Devils’ freshman class to enter the draft, joining Marvin Bagley III and Trevon Duval. A fourth, Wendell Carter Jr., has yet to announce his decision. Trent is the 15th one-and-done freshman in program history.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Ryan Blaney became the third Team Penske driver to win an Xfinity Series race in the No. 22 Ford when he took the checkered flag at Fort Worth, Texas.

Blaney was the pole sitter and led 132 of 200 laps.

FORMULA ONE: Sebastian Vettel took the pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir.

HOCKEY

COLLEGE: Karson Kuhlman had a goal and an assist, and Minnesota Duluth beat Notre Dame 2-1 at St. Paul, Minnesota, to win the school’s second NCAA championship.

Jared Thomas also scored and Hunter Shepard stopped 19 shots for the Bulldogs (25-16-3). UMD also won in 2011.

HOBEY BAKER: Forward Adam Gaudette of Northeastern won the top individual honor in men’s college hockey.

HORSE RACING

SANTA ANITA DERBY: AJustify vaulted into the role of probable Kentucky Derby favorite with a three-length victory over Bolt d’Oro in the $1 million race at Arcadia, California.

WOOD MEMORIAL: Vino Rosso survived a stewards’ inquiry to win the $1 million race at Aqueduct in New York.

BLUE GRASS STAKES: Good Magic overtook Flameaway entering the stretch to win the $1 million race at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester City opened a two-goal lead, then fell 3-2 at home to Manchester United, missing out on getting the title in record time.

United reduced City’s lead to 13 points. But with six games remaining, it seems inevitable City will win the title for the third time since 2012. It will happen next weekend if City wins at Tottenham on Saturday, and United loses to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

GERMAN LEAGUE: Bayern Munich defeated Bavarian rival Augsburg 4-1 on the road to win its record-extending sixth consecutive league title.
