BASEBALL

Malquin Canelo and Damek Tomscha each drove home a pair of runs Monday night as the Reading Fightin Phils downed the winless Portland Sea Dogs 6-5 at Reading, Pennsylvania.

Zach Coppolo’s sharp single to left scored Luke Tendler to give Reading (2-3) a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Canelo tripled Coppola home and then scored on Tomscha’s double to make it 6-3.

Esteban Quiroz’s ground single up the middle scored Cole Sturgeon and Danny Mars as Portland (0-4) countered with two runs in the fifth. But no Sea Dog reached base again as the Phils retired the final 15 batters.

COLLEGE: Jason Komulainen doubled home three runs to cap a six-run sixth inning, giving Southern Maine (12-6) a 13-7 lead over Plymouth State (9-9) en route to a 13-10 victory at Gorham. Komulainen also had a sacrifice fly in the third and an RBI single during a six-run fourth.

• Ben Gravel’s two-run single helped St. Joseph’s (16-5) to a 4-0 first-inning lead, and the Monks added a three-run fifth on the way to a 14-4 victory over Bowdoin (9-10) at Standish.

SOCCER

WORLD CUP: Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay agreed on 12 host cities for their centenary World Cup joint bid in 2030.

The Argentine Football Association said the plan would include eight cities in Argentina, and two each in Paraguay and Uruguay. The cities weren’t identified. Uruguay hosted the first World Cup in 1930.

BIATHLON

CHAMPION RETIRES: Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway, a four-time Olympic champion, retired from the sport.

Svendsen won individual and relay gold at the 2010 Olympics, and mass start and mixed relay gold in 2014. At this year’s Olympics, he won two silver medals and a bronze.

HOCKEY

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks will be the United States captain at the tournament in Denmark next month.

USA Hockey announced Kane as its first player for the tournament after naming Jeff Blashill as coach. General Manager Bill Zito praised Kane’s enthusiasm and eagerness to play for the U.S. after the Blackhawks missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008, when he also participated.

FOOTBALL

TEBOW WANTED: Steve Spurrier, the Orlando coach in the new Alliance of American Football, said Tim Tebow is welcome to join the team should he decide to switch back from baseball.

Tebow, the former Heisman Trophy quarterback, is currently playing for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, who will be at Hadlock Field this weekend against the Portland Sea Dogs.

HIGH SCHOOL: Spencer Emerson, the Lewiston defensive coordinator, received his first head-coaching job when he was hired by Poland.

ROAD RACING

TRUE RETURNS: North Yarmouth native Ben True will be back in Boston on Saturday to defend his American record in the Boston Athletic Association 5K.

True, 32, earned his fourth title in seven years last April and set the course record of 13 minutes, 20 seconds. Now living in Hanover, New Hampshire, the Greely High graduate is coming off a victory in the New York City Half Marathon in March.
