The Humane Society Waterville Area staff and board members read with sorrow about the passing of J.P. Devine’s cherished dog (“After the last dog is gone,” column, March 8).

We are very happy for the Devines that they are at least thinking about the possibility of adding another pup to their family, and we want to offer to take many of the worries listed in his column away from the process of finding “Finnegan.”

With some guidance as to what traits prospective adopters are looking for and willing to work with, we often help find the right match. Whether it be by working with some of our rescue partners or showing several of our current dogs in a private setting, we would be glad to do this for the Devines.

For dog people, adopting another dog doesn’t replace a cherished companion, but it does help fill the void and make life more normal again. And it can even save a life.
