An inmate at the Cumberland County Jail unsuccessfully tried to hang himself in his cell Wednesday, jail officials said.

Captain Steve Butts Jr. said in a release that the inmate has since been placed on suicide watch.

A corrections officer and member of the jail medical staff found the man around 9:25 a.m. placing a bed sheet around his neck, Butts said.

Jail staff helped the man, who was not seriously injured.
