A crowd estimated at 2,000 people showed up Sunday morning at the Sullivan Recreation and Fitness complex, located on the Portland campus of the University of Southern Maine, for the annual Great Maine Bike Swap.
The event, organized by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, offered a convenient venue for bikers to buy and sell quality used bicycles.
According to the bicycle coalition, an estimated 800 used bicycles were dropped off at the USM gymnasium Saturday evening, and by the time the doors opened at 10 a.m. Sunday, a long line of eager bike enthusiasts had formed outside.
The bike swap gave riders an opportunity to purchase hybrids, road bikes, mountain bikes, children’s bikes and recumbents. Organizers said the inventory covered all price ranges. The swap ended at 1 p.m. Sunday.
