JACKMAN — A new website has been created for the Jackman Area Community to help older citizens stay in their homes, according to a news release from Somerset Public Health. This site posts activities that need volunteers. Interested folks can check it out at www.lotsahelpinghands.com and clicking on “Join a Community” and entering Jackman 04945 for the Jackman Area Helping Hands. If a community member knows of an older citizen who could use some volunteer help, information can be given on that site or by contacting the coordinator, Denise Plante, at 668-9554 or deniseplante4040@gmail.com.

A down river trip is planned for older citizens to ride the KVCAP bus on May 18. The bus will pick up interested individuals in the morning and the group will go to lunch (place to be determined depending upon requests). Time will be allotted for shopping at Walmart and/or Hannaford’s, according to the release. Anyone interested should contact Plante to reserve a seat; first-come, first-served and space is limited.

A new exercise class has started on Mondays at 2:30 p.m., in addition to the Friday 10 a.m. exercise, at the Moose River Valley Center that focuses on strength and balance. All are invited at no charge. Many other activities such as quilting, crafting, bingo, poker and movies are going on at the center. Food and good conversation goes on during the potluck luncheon the second Monday of the month at 11:30 a.m. Call the center at 668-2171 to get on the mailing list which includes a monthly calendar of activities, according to the release.

The Knights of Columbus Rene Morin Senior Luncheon will hold its luncheons by donation only the third Wednesday of the month. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for those who wish to socialize and/or play cards, with the luncheon served at 11:30 a.m. No luncheon July and August because of lower turnout. Luncheons will resume in September, according to the release.

Folks should also be reminded that there is after hours (evening and weekends) acute care for emergencies at the Jackman Community Health Center. Call 668-7755 if you need care after hours or weekends. The response time has been approximately three to five minutes or less. As always, if you experience a medical emergency where seconds count, dial 911.
