The Augusta Police Department announced Friday that it was closing the north end of the Front Street parking lot, possibly through the weekend, because of minor flooding that’s expected on the Kennebec River.

That announcement came on the same day that the National Weather Service in Gray issued a flood warning for the Kennebec River in Augusta and Hallowell, according to Sean Goodwin, the county’s emergency management director.

The river could flood about two inches above the 12-foot flood scale in Augusta, Goodwin said in email to local officials.

“Keep watch out for higher water levels to be on the safe side,” Goodwin said.

While parking is not allowed in the north end of the Front Street parking lot, Augusta police said on Twitter that deliveries could be made there.

The river has been rising as rain has fallen and snow in the northern part of the state has melted, flushing out to the ocean.
