Democratic voters have many choices for the June 12 primary, but Attorney General Janet Mills has earned my trust and support.

Janet is a proven leader whose experience fighting for Maine people has spanned decades. I have known Janet for over 40 years, since we first met as students at University of Maine School of Law. Janet has pursued a public interest path, first as an assistant attorney general under Gov. Joe Brennan and then elected as New England’s first woman district attorney in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, a position to which she was re-elected three times. Janet was elected four times to the Legislature and named the first woman attorney general of Maine, a position she’s held for nearly eight years.

Throughout her service, I’ve seen her work tirelessly to ensure our most vulnerable don’t get left behind. Janet was one of the forces behind the creation of the Maine Women’s Lobby with the late Linda Smith Dyer, in 1978. We came together during a time when key votes were resolved late at night with little to no input from constituents. When the Legislature failed to allocate funding to provide shelter for women escaping domestic violence, Mills was instrumental in turning this around.

Growing up in rural Maine, in a family of Democrats and Republicans, she understands how to make government work. She addresses problems in a practical way with an engaging and outgoing personality that reflects her sense of humor and ability to work with folks of all backgrounds and income levels. And her energy level is amazing.

At the end of the day, Mainers are looking for effective leaders who knows how to things done. I’m tired of demagogues and single-issue candidates. If you are too, please join me in supporting Janet Mills for governor.
