AUGUSTA — A curious deer found itself trapped Thursday morning in the orange netting of a soccer goal on Piggery Road, prompting a response from city police.

The department announced the rescue in a Facebook post sprinkled with emoji images of a deer, a soccer ball and a police officer.

“Our Officers are called upon to handle many different kinds of calls,” the department wrote. “Today they got a surprise at the Piggery Road soccer fields when this deer was caught in the net.”

Police included three images of the doe lying on her right side, with her legs tangled in the net. In one photo, a gray blanket covers the deer as an officer uses shears to cut the orange cord.

The Facebook post identified the responding officers as Todd Nyberg and Zachary Tobias.

They “were able to approach and cut free the frightened doe,” the department wrote. “(I)t was last seen running at high speed towards the woods. Please don’t come back little one unless you are a spectator! Good work to our folks who have to be prepared for anything!”
