The Winthrop Maine Historical Society will host author Barbara Walsh at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Winthrop Town Office, 17 Highland Ave. Walsh will speak about her book “August Gale: A Father and Daughter’s Journey into the Storm.”

Walsh is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has worked for newspapers and magazines in the states and Ireland. She also is the author of three books. In her adult biography memoir, Walsh takes the reader on two heartrending odysseys: one into a deadly Newfoundland hurricane and the lives of schooner fishermen who relied on God and the wind to carry them home. The other, into a squall stirred by a man with many secrets: a grandfather who remained a mystery until long after his death.

During her research, Walsh traveled to Newfoundland several times and interviewed more than 100 people to learn about the gale that killed several of her sea-faring ancestors. She also interviewed scores of family members to learn about the grandfather she never knew. Walsh will share her tips and advice for gathering details about family history along with how to write a compelling memoir.

The program is free and open to the public.
