A 76-year-old man from Richmond died Friday night on Interstate 295 when his pickup truck crashed into a stand of trees in the highway median, Maine State Police said Monday.

Gary Hastings was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash after his 2008 Ford pickup left the roadway as he traveled northbound. Police were called to the scene about 9:30 p.m.

He was the only person in the vehicle, police said. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to have been factors in the crash.

A state police spokesman did not know whether Hastings was wearing a seatbelt.
