I recently voted in the June 12 primary elections at the Waterville town office. When I looked at the ballot I was expecting complications because of all the concerns that some Republican politicians have voiced about how difficult ranked-choice voting would be for people in Maine. Now, I am a Waterville resident of average intelligence, and I will tell you that I had no trouble whatsoever figuring out what to do.

As a registered Democrat I got to choose my top choice, and then I had the pleasure of ranking the rest of the field for governor, ranking four other contenders. This way I am almost certain that my vote will be counted. The process was as simple as putting a checkmark in a box by each of the contenders for governor I liked.

Of course I also voted yes on Question 1, which overrules the Legislature and honors the people of Maine’s choice to have the option of using ranked-choice voting in all of the races where it is constitutional.

I’ve got to say, that was a pretty good day.
