I am very disappointed to see you make a grab for headlines by linking Frankie Smith’s untimely and tragic death to his admitted bad choice some years ago (“Norridgewock farmer found dead under machine had kidnapping conviction,” June 1).

That was not the real Frankie Smith who took the hostage. He was pushed to the brink and he made the unfortunate decisions that he has regretted and that have haunted him since. Shame on you for exploiting him in that way.

Frankie was a kind and generous person who I am proud to have called a friend for nearly 40 years. He paid his debt to society, worked every day and was just trying to make his way through life on his farm.

Rest in peace, Frankie. You were always a good friend to me.
