CHELSEA — Multiple people were taken to the hospital on Monday afternoon after two cars crashed in Chelsea, near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Allenwood Park Road, officials said.

Six people were injured and one of them was in critical condition, said Trooper Mikael Nunez of the Maine State Police. The other five people did not have life-threatening injuries and some had been released from the hospital by Monday evening, according to Nunez.

Nunez, who spoke with witnesses at the scene, said that one car had stopped to make a left turn when the other drove into its back end. He did not identify anyone involved in the crash.

Two adult women were in the car that had stopped to turn left, Nunez said. An adult woman, one teenage boy and two girls were in the other car that came from behind, according to Nunez.

The crash was reported at 2:03 p.m. and caused traffic to be rerouted on Route 226 for about 25 minutes, according to Shawn Ramage, chief of the Chelsea Fire Department.

Police were still investigating the cause of the crash on Monday night.
