MaineVoices Live features 1:1 conversations between Portland Press Herald writers and notable Maine voices. Audience members can expect a memorable night and a chance for Q&A at the end.

Born in Lewiston and raised around the area, Patrick Dempsey has been acting in major films since the late-80s and became an instantly recognizable star after ten years of playing Dr. Derek Shepherd on the ABC drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”

His interests, talents and businesses are diverse: He started performing as a competitive juggler as a teenager at St. Dominic Academy; he’s raced cars professionally since 2004; he even has two fragrances with Avon.

When his mother Amanda was diagnosed with cancer in 1997, the Dempsey family saw a need for cancer patients in the area—somewhere to find resources, support, connect with patients and survivors, and to simply heal.

The Dempsey Center opened in 2008, investing in the well-being of Maine cancer patients, their families and caregivers, and in Lewiston’s economic development. In 2018, the Dempsey Center merged with the Cancer Community Center under the Dempsey Centers name, adding a second location in South Portland. This September, the tenth Dempsey Challenge, an annual run/walk/cycling fundraising experience, aims to raise $1.5 million to support the Centers’ free cancer support services.

The conversation will take place at Aura, 121 Center St. in Portland. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to the Dempsey Center.

This event is sold out.
