Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon in Mount Vernon in separate crashes that involved an all-terrain vehicle and a dirt bike, authorities said.

One man was injured badly in the ATV crash, which occurred near 1332 Pond Road and was reported around 4:05 p.m. That location is near the Camp Laurel summer program.

After the ATV crash, the man had to be taken away by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter, said Chief Dana Dunn, of the Mount Vernon Fire Department.

Also in the afternoon, another person was injured in a dirt bike accident in the area of Desert Pond Road, but Dunn did not go to that scene. That person injured an ankle, according to initial emergency dispatch reports.

More information about the accidents was not immediately available Wednesday evening. A member of the Maine State Police did not respond immediately to a request for comment, and Dunn said that he was too busy to talk for long.
