A former executive editor of the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram is being recognized for a distinguished career in journalism.

Lou Ureneck has been selected to receive a Yankee Quill award in October from the Academy of New England Journalists and the New England Society of News Editors. Ureneck, a native of New Jersey, came to Maine in 1974, joining the Guy Gannett newspapers in Portland. He worked as an editor for the Press Herald, the Evening Express and the Telegram. Now a professor at Boston University’s College of Communication, Ureneck was inducted into the Maine Journalism Hall of Fame in 2015.

Selection for the Yankee Quill award is not based on any single achievement but rather on the broad influence for good in serving the public welfare over the course of a career, according to a news release announcing his selection.
