NEWPORT — Police are seeking help from the public in finding a masked thief who made off with an undisclosed sum of money from a business making a bank deposit.

According to police Chief Leonard Macdaid, about 1 a.m. on Tuesday, employees from a local Burger King were making a cash deposit at the TD Bank branch on Main Street when a man wearing a ski mask who had been hiding came out and demanded the money.

Macdaid said the man was described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall and had a thin build. The thief did not display a weapon, and no one was hurt in the robbery.

Macdaid said he did not know why the employees were making a deposit so late at night.

Police are hoping the public can help provide information about the thief, where he ran or whether he got into a vehicle, Macdaid said. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the police station at 368-3263.
