I am writing to send a huge “thank you” to our local volunteer fire departments in Readfield and Mount Vernon.

On June 12 fire departments of Readfield and Mount Vernon, with assistance from surrounding towns in our Lakes Region mutual aid network, responded to a fire near our camps on the east shore of Torsey Pond (“Heavy fire destroys vacant camp near Torsey Pond on Mount Vernon-Readfield line,” June 12).

The blaze was started by improper disposal of smoking materials. It destroyed one vacant camp and threatened other nearby structures and woods that were in tinder-dry condition because of the persistent drought this summer. Without the decisiveness, immediate response and quick work of the fire crews, many of our camps would have been lost, and possibly many acres of woods destroyed.

Our camp owners’ association is extremely grateful to Chief Lee Mank of Readfield and Chief Dana Dunn of Mount Vernon for their leadership and commitment in quenching the blaze. Thanks to you and all the volunteer firefighters, a certain disaster was avoided.
