Two people were injured in a crash that shut down Route 302 in Westbrook on Friday morning.
The Westbrook police and fire departments responded to the crash at 7:22 a.m. near the intersection with Methodist Road. The preliminary investigation showed that Darrell Dennison, 48, of South Portland was driving west in a Dodge Charger sedan and crossed the center line.
Dennison struck one vehicle – a Chysler van driven by 52-year-old Sano Masua of Portland. Masua was not injured. Dennison then crashed head-on into a second vehicle – a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 49-year-old Richard Wallingford of Standish.
Wallingford was extricated from his truck and taken to the hospital for treatment of lower body injuries. Westbrook Capt. Sean Lally confirmed Wallingford is a deputy chief in the Standish Fire Department. Dennison was also pulled from his car and taken to the hospital for serious injuries. Medical personnel reported neither man had life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said it is too early to say why Dennison crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. The busy road was closed during rush hour and reopened around 11 a.m.
