MAPPING COASTAL PRESERVATION LANDS: The House passed the Strengthening Coastal Communities Act (H.R. 5787), sponsored by Rep. Neal P. Dunn, R-Fla., to use more precise, digital maps of coastal areas for the purpose of preserving those areas as barriers against hurricanes and other storms, and erosion. Dunn said the use of better maps should help residents of coastal communities by freeing them from being erroneously included in the coastal preservation zones, allowing them to access federal assistance programs. The vote, on Nov. 16, was 375 yeas to 1 nay.

ENDANGERED STATUS OF GRAY WOLVES: The House passed the Manage Our Wolves Act (H.R. 6784), sponsored by Rep. Sean P. Duffy, R-Wis., to have the gray wolf removed from the federal government’s list of endangered species in the contiguous 48 states before 2020.

Duffy said that with the number of gray wolves well above the threshold for removal from the endangered species list, the bill was needed “to allow us to successfully manage the gray wolf population which allows for a healthier ecosystem.” An opponent, Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., said: “Instead of enacting a new law to eliminate protections, we ought to be working with landowners, local and state agencies, and others to prevent conflicts so that we and wolves can both thrive.” The vote, on Nov. 16, was 196 yeas to 180 nays.
