BATH – Longtime City Councilor Bernard Wyman died Tuesday at Mid Coast Senior Center in Brunswick. He was 80.

Wyman was first elected to the Bath City Council in 1994 and went on to serve for a total of 24 years. He served as chair of the city council several times beginning in 2002, serving his last term in that position in 2013. He was elected to his ninth consecutive term in November.

“Bernie was one of the most stable consistent councilors that I have worked with. He took in all the information that he heard from people and you could tell that his wheels were turning, but when he was ready to take a vote he had come to a place in his mind of what the right decision was,” Bath City Council Chair Mari Eosco said. “I wouldn’t say he was a man of many words, but the words he did use were straight to the point and the truth for him.”

“That sounds really serious, but Bernie is one of the funniest guys I ever met.”

Wyman was born in Sanford in 1938. He graduated from Phippsburg Elementary School and Morse High School in Bath.

He married his wife of 60 years in 1958, and the year after he started working at Bath Iron Works.

Starting as a probationary ship fitter, Wyman held a number of different positions at the shipyard in a 36-year career there, including first-class ship fitter, leading man and assistant area supervisor. In 1995 he retired as a senior production planner, though he continued to work as a self-employed carpenter.

In addition to his work on the council and various city committees, Wyman was active with the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He also served in various leadership roles over 12 years with the Mid Coast Credit Union, including director. He also served on various boards, including at the Bath Area Senior Center and on the Salvation Army Advisory Board.

He is survived by his wife, Quinda Wyman.
