BELFAST, Maine — A trade group representing Maine’s lobstermen is set to take a position on a proposal to let dozens of people off the state’s waiting list for lobster fishing licenses.

Democratic Rep. Joyce McCreight has proposed letting more than 50 people off the waiting list, which includes more than 200 fishermen. The proposal’s up for a hearing on Tuesday in Augusta.

The Maine Lobstermen’s Association is scheduled to meet in Belfast on Monday afternoon to discuss taking a position on the issue. The group’s president, Kristan Porter, has declined to take a personal position on the issue.

McCreight’s proposal would let people off the waiting list who have been on it for 10 years or more. Critics of the system say it takes too long to yield new licenses.
