CASTINE — The Maine Maritime Academy says it has received a $10 million bequest from an alumnus’s estate, the largest donation in the academy’s 78-year history.

The bequest is from the estate of Capt. William Bullard, class of 1959.

The $10 million gift puts the school halfway to its goal for a $20 million fundraising campaign.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Maine Maritime enrolls 970 undergraduate and graduate students in career-oriented degree programs that include engineering, management, science and transportation.

MMA President William Brennan says about $14 million has been raised so far for the fundraising campaign, which would effectively double the amount of money the academy devotes to scholarships and student aid. The scholarship campaign will end in June 2022.
